Hazard function models to estimate mortality rates affecting fish populations with application to the sea mullet (Mugil cephalus) fishery on the Queensland coast (Australia)

چکیده

Survival analysis was applied to fisheries catch at age data to develop maximum likelihood estimators for stock assessment. This new method estimated natural mortality, fishing mortality and catchability from typical catch at age matrices. Monte Carlo simulations suggested estimates were unbiased and provided a better fit than the traditional multinomial approach. Application to a dataset from Queensland’s sea mullet fishery (Australia) estimated natural mortality to be equal to 0.319 ± 0.165 year.

First Report of a Toxic Nodularia spumigena (Nostocales/ Cyanobacteria) Bloom in Sub-Tropical Australia. II. Bioaccumulation of Nodularin in Isolated Populations of Mullet (Mugilidae)

Fish collected after a mass mortality at an artificial lake in south-east Queensland, Australia, were examined for the presence of nodularin as the lake had earlier been affected by a Nodularia bloom. Methanol extracts of muscle, liver, peritoneal and stomach contents were analysed by HPLC and tandem mass spectrometry; histological examination was conducted on livers from captured mullet. Liver...

Evaluation the Effects of Sub-lethal concentrations of Zinc Chloride on hepatic enzymes activity in grey mullet (Mugil Cephalus) in vitro

In the recent years, water pollution by contaminations are increasing rapidly, the problems of aquatic pollution with heavy metals which is one of the important pollutions indicate that necessary to assess in fish as an important source of human food. The aim of this study was investigated the sub-lethal effects of zinc chloride on hepatic enzymes activity in grey mullet (Mugil Cephalus). In th...

Phylogeography of the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus in the north-west Pacific as inferred from the mtDNA control region.

The population genetic structure and historical demography of the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus were investigated using the mtDNA control region (CR) sequences (909-1015 bp) of 126 individuals collected from seven locations in the north-west Pacific between 2005 and 2007. Haplotype diversity (h = 0.9333-1.000) and nucleotide diversity (pi = 0.0046-0.1467) varied greatly among the sampling loca...
